Zhang Chuhan's playing style is natural, atmospheric, and full of her own ideas. I particularly liked her interpretation of Chopin's preludes.
Zhang Chuhan, a young pianist, graduated from Yale University and the China Academy of Fine Arts, earning degrees in history, piano performance, and art history and music history. She began learning piano at a young age and has studied under renowned teachers such as Sun Yun and Melvin Chen. She has also received guidance from master pianist Cong Fu. Her performances have taken her to China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Poland, and Germany, including major international piano competitions and music festivals such as the 17th Chopin International Piano Competition, the 17th Leeds International Piano Competition, the 6th Shanghai International Youth Piano Competition, the Amalfi Music Festival in Italy, and the Alhambra Piano Festival in Spain. Her albums featuring Ravel and Debussy's piano works, "Floating Gold," were released by China Records in 2021. Her digital album of Chopin preludes was exclusively released by QQ Music in 2024. Zhang Chuhan is passionate about the fusion of music and the humanities. Her collaborative works with Yale University artist Liu Wa and Harvard University composer Sam Wu, including "Tree of Life" and "Still," have been awarded the "Innovative Art Award" and "Cross-Disciplinary Art Award" by Yale University. "Still" was exhibited at the Harvard University Arts First art festival and received widespread acclaim. Robert Block, former dean of the Yale School of Music, commented: "Chuhan's excellent and comprehensive technique makes her a highly versatile pianist, and her deep humanistic background allows her to interpret the profound inner meaning of music." In 2023, Zhang Chuhan was selected for the "Harmony of China" concert, organized by the People's Music Publishing House's "Piano Art" magazine and the China Musicians Association's Piano Society, becoming one of the top ten outstanding young pianists. The same year, she collaborated with conductor Zhang Lu and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra to successfully perform Chopin's "Piano Concerto No. 1" and Ravel's "Piano Concerto in G Major," receiving widespread praise. In June 2024, Zhang Chuhan was invited to collaborate with renowned conductor Hong Yi and the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra on a week-long tour of Chengdu, Foshan, Huizhou, and Guangzhou, known as "Hot Pot Symphony." She is also the resident artist for the orchestra for the 2024/25 season.
Currently, Zhang Chuhan is a researcher at the Art and Humanities College of the China Academy of Fine Arts. Her research focuses on the relationship between music and painting. Her book, "Making Antiques: The New Classicalism in Britain
